For their first concert of 2019, The Ripieno Players bring a night-themed concert to Birmingham Cathedral. Two Austro-Germanic masterpieces bookend the concert: Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Strauss’s Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings. The latter, written to mourn the dusk of German culture after the Second World War, provides the perfect antithesis to Mozart’s joyful description of the Viennese night sky. Continuing The Ripieno Players’ dedication to premiering new music, Richard English’s Dark Water completes a thought-provoking trio of pieces.
